When disaster strikes you need practical tools to survive, such as medical help, clean water, food, and shelter. Then in the aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes or severe flooding, there’s a significant emotional toll. This is seen within a population for years to come following disaster and war.
This was certainly the case with the Canterbury Earthquakes in New Zealand in 2010 and 2011. There are now 20 studies showing widespread negative effects on mental health. Not surprisingly, these negative effects include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
For Cantabrians still suffering mentally and emotionally from the Canterbury earthquakes, trauma has resurfaced after the horror of the Christchurch terror attack in New Zealand this year. Noted were increases in anxiety, depression and Post Traumatic Stress symptoms. This includes not only the survivors of the terror attack, first responders who work in incredibly difficult situations for long hours, but also those re-traumatised after suffering previously. The Emotional Freedom Techniques (Tapping), rapidly and gently releases the emotional effects of living through natural disasters and in war zones.
Tapping (EFT) has been used with many war veterans suffering the after-effects of combat and from living in war zones. It’s estimated that 30% of those who have been in war zones will suffer from the debilitating Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). Sadly, only about half of those suffering will seek help.
Energy Psychology research in disaster and war zones
Did you know that Energy Psychology has been used successfully with many civilians and veterans who have lived through war and disasters such as Kosovo, Rwanda, and Haiti?
EFT falls under the umbrella of Energy Psychology and is used for trauma, anxiety, depression, nightmares, flashbacks, survivor’s guilt, anger, feeling emotionally numb, overwhelming stress, unresolved grief, and physical pain.
Even in the most horrific circumstances, gentle and rapid healing is possible with Clinical EFT. See this story from my client who processed their trauma significantly more quickly and effectively than with regular talk therapy.
