Clinical EFT
What is Clinical EFT?
Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that sits within the field of energy psychology. Also known as Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT tapping, it’s a client-centred mind-body (somatic) therapy that combines elements of cognitive therapy with gentle body based techniques.
Clinical EFT helps reduce emotional pain, calm the nervous system, and support emotional healing.
How Clinical EFT can help you
Many of my clients find that Clinical EFT gives them relief from concerns such as:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Low mood or depressive symptoms
- Emotional trauma, post-traumatic stress, and complex trauma responses
- Trauma from emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
- Stress and overwhelm
- Phobias and fears
- Negative emotions like anger, guilt, shame, and resentment
- Limiting beliefs and negative thinking patterns
Clinical EFT can help you feel calmer, more regulated, and better able to move forward with confidence and greater self-trust.
A flexible client-led approach
Some people feel ready to talk about what they’ve been through. Others don’t, especially at first, and that’s okay. Clinical EFT allows us to work with emotions and body sensations in a way that’s guided by your readiness.
As your nervous system settles, you may find it easier to talk, but this is always your choice, and we move only at a pace that feels right for you.
How Clinical EFT works
In a Clinical EFT session, you’re guided to gently tap on the face and upper body while tuning into thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations.
The specific points on your body are called ‘tapping points’. These are often places where people instinctively place their hands when feeling stressed, such as the forehead or temples.
The Clinical EFT tapping process helps reduce emotional distress, calm the nervous system, and support your body’s natural healing response.
Sessions are guided at a pace that feels manageable for you, allowing your system to settle and responses to shift naturally over time.
Clinical EFT research
Clinical EFT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach. It is supported by over 100 research studies and has been featured in more than 15 peer-reviewed medical and psychological journals.
In a large Clinical EFT study, participants experienced the following improvements:
- 40% reduction in anxiety
- 35% decrease in depression
- 32% reduction in PTSD symptoms
- 57% reduction in pain
- 74% reduction in cravings
- 31% increase in happiness
Subsequent studies and systematic reviews have reported similar outcomes, supporting Clinical EFT’s effectiveness in reducing emotional distress and improving emotional regulation and wellbeing.
Clinical EFT is distinct from Emotionally Focused Therapy
Please note that Clinical EFT is different and distinct from Emotionally Focused Therapy.
- Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is often shortened to EFT.
- Another respected therapeutic approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy, which can also be referred to as EFT.
If you’ve come across the term EFT before, it’s helpful to know that there are two distinct methods.
I practice Clinical EFT only.
Clinical EFT FAQs
What kinds of issues can Clinical EFT help with?
Clinical EFT has been shown to be effective in addressing anxiety, trauma, phobias, grief and stress. It can also support confidence, self-worth and emotional resilience.
By calming the body’s stress response and reducing emotional intensity, Clinical EFT helps people process unresolved experiences safely and effectively, so they feel lighter, clearer, and less reactive in daily life.
Do I need to talk about painful memories for EFT to work?
Not necessarily. EFT allows emotional intensity to be released safely, and what you share is always guided by what feels right for you.
We work within your comfort level and I use the Clinical EFT “gentle techniques” when needed.
For many people, this feel reassuring and supportive.
How does Clinical EFT help calm the stress response?
Clinical EFT helps the nervous system shift out of threat mode and into a calmer, more regulated state. This means the parts of the brain involved in stress responses, including structures like the amygdala, don’t stay “on alert” in the same way as they did before.
Over time, repeated experiences of regulation can change how the nervous system responds to emotional triggers, making it easier to feel more settled.
How does Clinical EFT differ from traditional talk therapy?
While talk therapy focuses on thoughts and feelings, Clinical EFT also engages the body’s stress response. By calming your nervous system, it helps you process emotions and feel less reactive to emotional triggers.
Clinical EFT belongs to the wider field of mind-body methods sometimes referred to as Energy Psychology.
Can Clinical EFT be done online?
Yes. Clinical EFT works really well in online sessions. I’ll guide you step by step so you feel comfortable and supported.
What’s the difference between Clinical EFT and the general tapping videos I can find online?
Clinical EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is an evidence-based therapeutic method supported by more than 100 peer-reviewed studies, including over 60 randomised controlled trials. It combines structured tapping with mindful awareness to help calm the body’s stress response and reduce emotional intensity.
- General tapping videos and some relaxation techniques may offer short-term relief.
- Clinical EFT, by contrast, is designed to process emotions and the experiences that trigger them, particularly when these responses are held in the body. As these body-based responses are safely processed, the emotional charge linked to past experiences can subside.
For example, distressing memories lose their intensity.
